Power Racks

What makes a good rack?

    A good power rack is deep enough to allow for full body movements, high enough to allow for presses, and wide enough to allow a wide hand spacing, yet sturdy enough to deal with a dropped bar crashing down on the pins. Preferably it has holes at 2-inch intervals going from top to bottom. It also has four pins and at least 4 J-hooks to hang the bar on. Someone who sumo-squats with a wide stance might have to build up the area inside the rack to in able to spread the feet correctly. That is easily done so the essentials remain those listed above.

     The first advantage of working out in a rack is safety. When the pins are set at the appropriate level the bar can get to that point and no lower. If you are squatting, benching, or doing shoulder presses it means that depositing the bar on the pins frees you of the weight pushing down on you. There is no risk of getting stuck under a bar. A few people die that way every year and far more injure themselves. With a rack that risk is minimal. The only things to consider is that the pins might slide with the bar. This is most easily solved by having self locking pins, but if not, drill a hole in the pin and insert a small pin, use a couple of spare collars on the pins, or simply strap duct-tape over the front ends of the pins and make sure it is well attached to the frame itself
